Recently, Leslie Moonves has stepped down for sexual misconduct toward subordinate female employees. It was also revealed before he stepped down the amount of trouble he was behind putting one of the world’s biggest superstars in entertainment through hell years ago. She almost lost her career. I’m talking about Janet Jackson. The question I have is with her everlasting clout, why no one came to Janet’s aid when this person attempted to single-handedly erase her as an entertainer as we know it? She has access to the best of everything, why not the best lawyer to shut this bullshit down? What could it be to make this so hard to combat?
As of late, Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka witnessed first-hand what a chauvinist will do to show power over women he deems to be too strong or full of herself. This is the mentality we must face head-on to keep our daughters, nieces and all the above safe and strengthened to overcome well before they become of age. Bad enough Serena was perceived and depicted as the angry black woman for the world to observe, but that didn’t change the fact that she indeed was cheated out of a fair match with Naomi a promising young phenom, who also deserved a fair chance. What could these types people want? Could it be dominion or power? This issue is acute. It’s everywhere.
Everywhere includes our military. Almost the whole population has been raped or sexually assaulted; the numbers never reflect the violent events as most solders and veterans do not speak about their experiences. The statistics for male victims are just as high for women and are suspected to be higher. Take the cadences that are used to motivate soldiers. The words describe an army culture that most would not understand until they are attacked by another in uniform, typically an individual who out-ranks the victims. Most of these songs have been banned due to their content.
The blue collar work environment is another area well known for its ongoing campaign against women entering its space and more applicable today controlling the amount of women who are allowed to remain there. The usual mechanisms are implemented by workers via bets on who will sleep with the women first on the job. If they do, they go as far to get them to do it on the job and take media of it without her knowledge, participate in collective sexual harassment and assault as well. Records are well kept of it. This goes on for as long as the woman works the job. Most times they are coerced into sex to keep their jobs, the unions and managers usually are involved in this ring. There are perplexing examples of this in the police department, the department of sanitation and the department of corrections. As we have heard of what has happened with NYCHA this summer, city or government jobs are no different no matter the location. Sexual harassment and assault is a part of the American way. Let us not forget about parent of the two, which is bigotry. Hence, we had the unfortunate situation involving Serena and Naomi. Is the white-collar setting any different?
No, it’s not. An example would be the current Trump administration. The biggest issue I’d like to focus on was the role women played as opposed to the men there and the current most important office in the country. Women lie for men to protect them while they abuse other women. Females are in positions to stop these acts and do not. Maybe its Stockholm’s syndrome or pure self- hatred, but they have supported the actions of predators and are destructive themselves. Substance abuse and cheating to make new policies is standard. There is a collective bulling and harassment movement towards the abused to keep victims from revealing the crime against them or to punish for divulging the truth. Hard proof of this is the treatment of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford who spoke up against Judge Kavanaugh. The executive buys other key business people so they can use them later to push their agenda, with wives and other partners alike who don’t love the executive but the lifestyle therefore, do they really care? These acts are exemplary of the same behavior demonstrated in the movie Wolf of Wall Street. The white- collar job environment beat the ones that seem to be more primitive.
Surprisingly, the white-collar force yields the worst offenders. Historically, as in back in the Mad Men days, hard liquor and smoking was normal in any office setting. I won’t say this contributed to the actions of those employees in the past as it would today. Imagine, the young teenage secretary always accompanying her older more powerful CEO boss must always be available to take dictation. There were no sexual harassment laws, and sexual misconduct came with the job. Being in the secretary’s seat essentially meant you signed up to be a concubine. Most older women will inform you of that if they aren’t too angry from having to endure such treatment in their younger years. The aggressors are never brought to justice.
Again, it is typical with the laws in place to mitigate sexual harassment and assault, to form the right associations and hoard money as an attacker, you can live a prison free existence. Most people have a price, so the monetary part is understandable. You never know who or what one may owe and why. The complex issue is, who are the people that mutually agreed with Moonves to collectively punish these women at no cost? We know that they are not open about who they are. We also can we also recognize that all are not men. We must consider the type of machine that lists one’s who have gone against the Moonves type by fighting their abuse. How can this take place in the land of the free?
Madison eloquently stated “Ambition must be made to counteract ambition. The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to controul the abuses of government.” in Federalist # 51. Factions are to be countered by interfering with their communication as Madison suggested in Federalist #10. This was the exact reason for our constitution. Today is it being compromised on astronomical levels. We have allowed the election of a president who has disregarded our rights as citizens and is continuing to do so through most of his daily actions via the regulations and rules he passes. Furthermore, he is the head of the United States largest factions, the racist citizens that support him and his ideation. A couple of positions he supports are, sexually assaulting women, the formation of gangs to bully people for standing for themselves to include hate groups against people of color and legally enslaving them. We’ll never know who the oblivious suspects are, but if we think about it, we can easily come up with the more overt ones are. Any guesses? Think about who is behind the repeal of any law that protect the rights of anyone in the country of the United States. You’ve got your answer.
We could learn from these tyrants. They know how to stand together even when they are at each other throats. We can’t change the past, but we can do something about the future of our lives. I have referred to the United States government but take in to consideration how corporations and most companies mimic the actions of our current administration. We must change this predatory culture before it consumes us. Talking about the experiences women go through is not only about them, they have husbands, fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins and such. Unfortunately, they have stories too, but the response is not showing concern and seeking an immediate resolution. What is, is that more empathy for the victimizer rather than the victim is shown, even among casualties. A discreet vagina grabber comes in many appearances. Regardless of who they are, we are obligated to check them by demanding the help needed to make sure that this sociopathic nature is addressed properly. Representation is needed and a right. That doesn’t entail a $120 million severance package, but prison time, punitive damages for the victims and astronomical fines in our civil courts would be a start. To the victims, keep talking. If that doesn’t work, write to complain until you get the right resolution. The larger picture is that everyone’s rights are at stake, we must use them now.
